August 3, Lake Itasca State Park, Park Rapids, Mn

Today is day 50.  Only 39 days left for our Northern Tier Adventure.  Laura's bike was having mechanical difficulties so we stopped on route to a bike shop in Walker.  Paul, the repair guy, fixed her derailleur and we were on our way.  It was another great, sunny day weather wise.  Our route was only 53 miles today so we had a relaxed feeling all day.  We stopped in Laporte for a break and saw a Sinclair gas station.  We thought they went out of business a long time ago.  There was a dinosaur in front so I couldn't resist getting a picture with it.  Laura and I decided to take some non-scheduled detours to avoid about 10 miles of gravel roads.  It added a few miles to our route but it was worth it.  At Itasca State park we biked up to the head waters of the Mississippi.  It looked like people were having a lot of fun swimming in the water there.  Laura would have loved to join them but we had to get to camp as she is the chef tonight.  Maybe she will swim there on a future visit.

Priceless adventures! Once you have done a gravel road or two, opting out, added mile detour are reasonable & understandable!!
