Today was a day at sea but featured a sail through Glacier Bay to see glaciers. The bow deck was open so that we could see both sides of the bay at the same time. We passed Gloomy Knob, a large rock outcropping on the way to the first and largest glacier we viewed, Margerie Glacier, named after a man whose last name is Margerie. We were treated to several calving episodes,the crashing sounds were surprisingly loud. It was then on to Johns Hopkins Inlet to see the Johns Hopkins Glacier and Lamplugh Glacier. The glaciers reached their maximum in 1750 and began to retreat with the end of The Little Ice Age. We also saw plenty of wildlife including an eagle, several otters (three of which were lying on a piece of ice floating in the bay), many sea lions and at least two whales. We had a little excitement when we reached the Dining room and Laura realized she left her purse in the room where we attended 5:00 Mass. By the time she got back there someone had picked it up and dropped it off at the customer service desk. By the time she retrieved it, we were at peak dinner time. Our dinner took about an hour and a half from start to finish, twice the norm. The weather was cold and rainy until noon when it got foggy. By dinner time the clouds cleared up but the waves picked up to the point where the dance show was cancelled for the safety of the dancers. Johnny Cardinale, a comedian, stepped in to give us evening entertainment. The night concluded with a chocolate giveaway where waiters near the casino served 5 or 6 different types of chocolates and cake. Tomorrow is our last full day.
