Today was our chance to explore Homer. We are staying at Land's End Resort at the very tip of what locals call "the spit". The Homer Spit is a long, narrow peninsula of land that projects 4.5 miles into Kachemak Bay. This land mass was formed by a glacier millions of years ago. This morning we walked "the spit" and stopped at some of the many shops and restaurants along the road. There is also a ferry terminal and large marina there. The Kachemak Bay provides great fishing thanks to some of the most nutrient rich water in the world. In the afternoon we drove to the Alaska Islands & Ocean Visitor Center which has a great history of the area including the native Alaskans, Russian ownership and World War II to the present. We drove to a high vantage point overlooking Homer and the spit. On the way down we came across two Moose grazing in front of the Belmont Visitor Center. Tomorrow we return to Anchorage.
