We sailed into Alaska’s first city, Ketchikan around 6:00 am. We were awake at that time since we crossed a time zone and gained an hour of sleep so it seemed like 7:00 am. That gave us extra time to be ready for our 7:45 am pick up to travel to the Tongass rain forest where it rains 300 days per year. Today was no exception. Juan and Brittany were our guides. We rode e-bikes for the first time and rode several miles uphill into the woods to a man made lake. The lake was created to supply water to a paper mill in town. The wooded pipeline supplied 4 million gallons of water to the mill each day. The trail we cycled paralleled the pipe line. We parked our bikes and then hiked farther into the woods where there was a campfire prepared for us. There we were given hot chocolate and s’mores before jumping back on to our bikes for the return ride. We were back at the ship in time to walk the streets of Ketchikan and visit Creek Street which was known as being the red light district of Ketchikan in the days of the gold rush. Laura and I spent time on the observation deck and were able to see a bald eagle and a pod of whales as we sailed away from Ketchikan. The evening entertainment was provided by Major Fourth, a quartet of singers. Our next stop tomorrow will be in Juneau, the capital of Alaska.
