This morning we woke up early so we could be on deck as the ship rounded Isla Hornos, the tip of Cape Horn. Much to our surprise the seas were calm. Our cruise director said the Drake Shake turned into the Drake Lake. It does not happen very often but no one was complaining. The weather was overcast and cool with scattered showers. On Isla Hornos there is a lighthouse that is manned by a family with 3 children.
After breakfast we attended a lecture entitled Nautical Knowledge. We learned where some nautical terms originated. Also a few days ago I said our ship dropped anchor. In reality, the ship used Dynamic Positioning. Using GPS the ship has the ability to stay in one place by automatically using its engines and thrusters to constantly adjust its position and not move.
This afternoon we attended a Port Talk about Ushuaia, Argentina, our next port of call. The staff reviewed all of the excursions going out tomorrow. The ship arrived in Ushuaia around 7:00 pm. Since we still had plenty of daylight, Laura and I walked through the town. It is definitely not a tourist town but it is the starting point for many excursions. More importantly, it is a commercial transfer point for cargo going to the other side of South America or to the Antarctic.
When we returned to our room we found a certificate with our name on it affirming that we "Passed the Horn". Our last activity of the night was going to another magic show by Jansenson the magician.
