We sailed into Puerto Montt this morning. The ship's tender took us into port where busses were waiting to bring us to Vicente Perez Rosales National Park. At the park we rode a tour boat around Emerald Lake (aka Lago Todos los Santos). It was cloudy and rainy but we did get a glimpse of the Osorno volcano through openings in the clouds. It is snow capped even in summer and stands at 8,701 feet. Osorno unofficially marks the northern boundry of Chilean Patagonia.
Our bus then took us to Petrohue Falls. By the time we arrived the clouds moved off and gave us a great view of the Osorno volcano. The falls were small but scenic as they carved thier way through volcanic rock. Since it is almost summer, flowers were blooming including the Chloraea Orchid. There was also a Spanish Broom which looks a lot like a pussy willow.
It was then on to lunch in Puerto Varas. Chilean salmon was served along with Pisco Sour to drink. It tastes alot like a whiskey sour. There are only two streets of shopping in the town and Laura took full advantage of the hour they gave us to be tourists. The market had many locally hand made sweaters and blankets for reasonable prices.
We again ate dinner at the Chef's Table. The theme of the 5 course dinner was spices around the world. Each course was matched to a specific wine.
Tonight's entertainment featured a Farewell presentation from the crew followed by vocalists paying tribute to the Beatles. The captain's farewell speech included a warning letting know that we are leaving the fjords and will sail into the Pacific ocean again. This time should not be as choppy since the previous gale force winds have subsided.
