Today was a non-cycling day. In the morning we had a walking tour of Split. The tour started in front of the palace of Diocletians, the retired emperor of Rome. He treated his soldiers well so his reign lasted 20 years. Emperors before and after him had a tenure of about 2 years and were overthrown (murdered) by ambitious underlings seeking power for themselves. The palace was 35,000 square feet and was protected by 300 soldiers. There was never an attack on the castle until World War 2 when the Allies bombed the Nazis who had taken control of the palace.
After lunch the captian anchored off of a small island so we could swim, kayak and paddle board. We then set off for Trogir, our starting and ending point for week one.
Davio, one of our two guides, is also an artist. He paints using oils and also creates ceramic art. He brought samples of his work with him and several of the guests purchased his work including Laura.
Tonight was our goodbye dinner for the guests. Laura and I are the only ones staying on for another tour. The captain joined us for our final dinner. As usual it was beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked. We had live music as part of our going away party.
