August 7, 2024, Mackinac Island

 Today was our layover day.  We cycled over to the dock and hopped the ferry to Mackinac Island.  It is pronounced "mackinaw" like the city despite the spelling. The island was much larger and more developed than I had imagined.  There were several hotels and many large homes, some of which are bed and breakfast establishments.  There was an eight mile path that ran the perimeter of the island.  We cycled around the island twice  and a few trails for a total of about twenty miles.  No motor vehicles are allowed on the island.  Bicycles were everywhere and horse drawn carriages were available to travel the trails across the island.  Major attractions included two forts, a rock arch and several museums.  The island has historical significance as a battle ground for the war of 1812.  We enjoyed ice cream at Moomers, a Mackinaw area favorite, and consumed white fish, another favorite, at Audies back in Mackinaw City.  Tomorrow is our longest day of the tour.
